AI4the.Win Newsletter - May 7, 2023

Our mission is to 10x YOU with the AI tools ready for prime-time today and prepare for more significant tomorrow's disruption.

The Big Picture - Navigating the Rapid Evolution Ahead

Hold on tight because the AI tools that seem impressive today will soon look outdated compared to what's on the horizon. As Sam Altman noted on the Lex Fridman podcast, “At the time of GPT-3, people were like 'this is amazing, this is [a] marvel of technology,'... and it was. But now we have GPT-4, and you look at GPT-3 and you're like 'that's unimaginably horrible.'” He added, "I expect the delta between 5 and 4 will be the same as between 4 and 3. It's our job to live in the future and remember that our tools are going to kind of suck looking back at them."

In practical terms, this means understanding how to think about AI and using the latest tools right now will lay the foundation for future success. The mindset, skills, and methods you develop today are crucial because they will shape your abilities tomorrow. Every day, remind yourself to be AI-enabled. Build and refine your GPTs to become better assistants, constantly interact with them, and use iterative methods to extract maximum value.

To be fully prepared, immerse yourself in the evolution of AI. Embrace the potential of these tools to dig deeper and reach more comprehensively than ever before. Paradoxically, this will likely mean spending more time on some tasks or projects rather than less. With AI, you gain access to expertise that was previously unavailable. Your exploration, supported by AI insights, will deepen your understanding, enhance decision-making, and help you innovate beyond traditional boundaries.

Our AI4the.Win community is passionate about transforming professionals into powerful AI users. By thoughtfully managing a team of AI assistants tailored to specific needs, you'll be amplified into an "army of five, ten, or even a hundred," capable of tackling challenges in unprecedented ways. The rapidly evolving nature of AI demands continuous learning, so stay engaged and adaptable.

The AI-enabled future requires us to remain vigilant, nimble, and always learning. By committing to this journey together, you'll lead the charge into the next era of AI-powered potential.

AI’s Impact on Law

While virtually every profession is poised for disruption, the legal field is particularly vulnerable due to its reliance on language and knowledge-based work. With over 50% of our newsletter subscribers being lawyers eager to harness AI's potential, it's clear that understanding and integrating these tools is crucial.

Although the long-term impact on the legal profession remains uncertain, one thing is clear: Lawyers who embrace AI and adapt their service delivery are positioned to win in the coming years. Robot lawyers may still be distant, but the standard of competence today requires AI tools. Law firms already using AI are providing clients with more ] value at a reduced cost.

You're already being left behind if you aren't fully engaged with AI. The legal professionals who recognize this and remain agile will thrive, finding innovative ways to leverage AI to improve efficiency, client outcomes, and the value they deliver.

The Quadcore Learning Method

You're missing out on its full potential if you're trying to learn how to speak to AI without the right mindset and methodology. The Quad Core Learning Method offers foundational tools to maximize your impact with AI. Here are today's tips for each of the four foundational elements:

1. Mindset

Today's Mindset Tip: Breath, Engage, and Take Your Time Using AI.

Cultivate a proactive attitude toward AI. Don't view it as a threat or novelty; see it as an opportunity to expand your skills and enrich your practice. This means staying curious, experimenting, and remaining open to new approaches.

Today's tip focuses on a crucial mindset: Go slow rather than fast. It's a misconception that AI is only about speed. AI provides access to intelligence and knowledge, allowing lawyers and business professionals to become experts on any given topic quickly. This opens up the potential to dive deeper and explore more thoroughly than was previously possible.

As you work with AI, treat it as a tool to gain expertise faster, enabling you to deliver more insightful and comprehensive work. This might require more time to set up a GPT for a specific issue or to interact iteratively with the AI as you delve into the nuances of a topic. However, the outcome will be a 10x improvement in work quality.

One of the key lessons I've learned is that patience is essential. Build and iterate on your GPTs, and continue interacting with each thread to unlock their true potential. By taking your time and working deliberately, you'll achieve higher expertise and produce superior results.

2. Method

Today's Method Tip: Don’t Go Down the Rabbit Hole of AI.

Develop a repeatable approach that integrates AI into your workflow. Create a system for experimenting with new tools, documenting successes, and iterating to find what works best. This will help you establish consistent results and foster innovative thinking.

Today's tip builds on a concept familiar to those who've followed me for the last 18 months: Be careful and judicious when experimenting with new AI tools. With so many emerging options, it's easy to spend your entire day exploring tools rather than doing real work. The truth is that the tools currently ready for primetime are limited, and those that seem promising today could become obsolete tomorrow.

Your method should be strategic and recognize that data privacy is crucial. You might be handling sensitive information about your company, customers, or clients. Avoid third-party tools from lesser-known companies whose security and privacy measures haven't been rigorously vetted. Stick with established players in the AI space and wait for them to develop their tools further.

In summary, a well-structured approach will ensure you're spending time wisely. Focus on AI tools that have demonstrated reliability and support long-term productivity. Be ready to adapt as better tools emerge, but avoid chasing the latest gimmicks that may only add risk and distraction to your practice.

3. Skills

Today's Skills Tip: Build and Refine Your GPT Assistants.

Continuously refine your ability to prompt, customize, and apply AI tools. Practice crafting detailed prompts, fine-tune your models and explore features that automate repetitive tasks or enhance creativity.

Today's skills tip focuses on a significant recent innovation: creating custom GPTs and utilizing the increased context window in leading tools. This allows for more comprehensive interactions and precise outputs.

To harness these advancements, you should focus on building a GPT for a specific task and iteratively improving it over time. Treat your GPT as an evolving assistant that becomes more effective with each round of training and instruction. Test new prompts, refine workflows, and ensure your assistant meets your requirements.

If you're already part of the AI4WIN community—which is free to join—you'll find courses that guide you in developing, using, and improving GPT tools to maximize their impact on your professional life. By mastering these skills, you'll be equipped to leverage the power of AI in transformative ways that directly benefit your work.

4. Measurement

Today's Measurement Tip: Evaluate Impact with the AI Amplify Factor.

The fourth foundational element of the Quad Core Training Method is measurement. Understanding how AI impacts your work across three key metrics: speed, quality, and intangible benefits is crucial. While speed is often the primary focus, quality improvements, and intangible gains are just as vital.

Today’s tip is to consider the difference between 2x, 5x, and 10x productivity improvements. Evaluating these distinctions will help you refine your AI engagement methods, improve your skills, and evolve your mindset around AI's role in your professional life.

To assist with this evaluation, we've developed a free GPT tool called the AI Amplify Factor that anyone can use to measure AI's impact on specific workflows or tasks. I encourage everyone to pick one AI workflow a day and use this tool to assess how AI influenced your work's speed, quality, and benefits.
